Tonight’s visitor: a luna moth

One of the best things about living in Florida is the wildlife. We’ve had giant blue crabs knocking on our door, seen colorful alligators in the neighborhood ponds, and even neon blue and orange snakes.

Tonight, we saw an enormous, breathtakingly beautiful green moth with what appeared to be sets of eyes on its wings. The moth was about the size of my hand! The only moth I have seen that is larger is the atlas moth that I ordered from Thailand, and that was not much larger.

I looked the moth up, and it’s called a luna moth. They are part of the Saturniidae subfamily, which are giant silk moths. An early birthday present for Elise!
