California offering $500 ($1,000 per household) to undocumented immigrants because coronavirus

From The Hill:

California will distribute one-time cash payments of $500 to undocumented immigrants in the state in response to financial concerns arising amid the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced Wednesday.

The payments will be funded by a $75 million Disaster Relief Fund and will be disbursed through a community-based model of regional nonprofits with experience serving undocumented communities, according to Newsom’s announcement.

“California is the most diverse state in the nation. Our diversity makes us stronger and more resilient. Every Californian, including our undocumented neighbors and friends, should know that California is here to support them during this crisis. We are all in this together,” Newsom said in a statement.

Approximately 150,000 undocumented adult Californians will receive a one-time cash benefit of $500 with a cap of $1,000 per household.

Undocumented Americans are not eligible for the federal stimulus relief checks.

In addition to the $75 million state funding for the checks, Grantmakers Concerned with Immigrants and Refugees (GCIR), a network of foundations focused on immigration issues, committed to raising $50 million to support direct financial assistance to families of undocumented immigrants through the California Immigrants Resilience Fund.

  1. This is another reason to separate California from the continent. Including WA and OR would not be excluded. This is one more diminution of values.
The decline of this culture is hastened.

    1. Guaranteed to outrage a lot of people. I think I disagree with the people who say that federal taxpayers are not paying for it though. Federal taxpayers are providing extensive aid to state and local governments to help carry them through the crisis. That’s arguably one of the forces that allows Newsom to use these funds for this purpose. Of course, CA is going to come back to the feds after they have more of a sense what the shutdown has done to their revenues.

  2. I had been surprised and somewhat pleased that Newsom’s response to COVID-19 hasn’t been the worst of the worst. If you can get to the beach, you can still walk on it. Trails and parks are open, and he hasn’t made a particular effort to shut down gun stores.

But now this. Democrats are so confident they have a monopoly on power in the state that they’re just flaunting it now.

    1. You are better off lifestyle-wise than Florida right now. But part of that is the mayors in some of these beach towns are trying to show they are relevant. We have almost no coronavirus cases here and they have everything blocked off.

  3. Originally being from Southern California, and knowing how problematic the influx of illegals is, this is just asinine! Don;t people realize the MORE we give to people who live here ILLEGALLY, more and more people will continue to come ILLEGALLY! They ARE NOT eligible for ANYTHING, and certainly NOT above AMERICA citizens!
