Red states want to open up their economies before the end of the month and it seems likely they are going to do that with Trump’s blessing.
New York and other East Coast states are extending their shutdown of nonessential businesses to May 15 as officials grapple with how to reopen parts of the economy without leading to a resurgence in coronavirus cases, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday.
Cuomo announced the news at a press conference in Albany and via Twitter, saying “New York on PAUSE” will be extended in coordination with other states.
“We have to continue doing what we’re doing. I’d like to see that infection rate get down even more. The New York Pause policies, the close-down policies, will be extended in coordination with other states to May 15,” Cuomo said. The lockdown was previously scheduled to lift on April 30.
I couldn’t care less what folks up there do, but I do think if they want to have the forever shutdown, federal taxpayers in other regions should not be supplementing the fiscal disaster they are creating with our own wealth. If they want to do this, they should figure out how to pay for it when half of their residents are unemployed and their corporations are going under. Because four more weeks of this certainly means that’s happening.
It’s a conscious policy decision, and they should pay for what they do to their people. You make your bed, you get to sleep in it.
