Of the two bald eaglets in our neighborhood nest, Jules and Romy, both have now fledged the nest. Jules just up flew the nest for good a while back, though the fine folks at the American Eagle Federation think Mom and Dad are taking care of her off-site, bringing her food and teaching her to hunt. I think I saw her in a tree in our neighbor’s backyard the other day, but it is difficult to tell. From a distance, young bald eagles look like vultures to me.
Romy is taking his sweet time leaving the nest on that scale, but he is taking short journeys and returning. After so much tragedy in the nest last year, I cannot tell you how happy it makes me to see a couple new mature-ish eagles added to the numbers of this threatened species. What a gift it is to live in a place where there is still legitimately room for wilderness.
