We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
or rats’ feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar
Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;
Those who have crossedT.S. Eliot, The Hollow Men
With direct eyes, to death’s other kingdom
Remember us – if at all – not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men.
There is a fascinating phenomenon happening on the political left. Surely I am not the only one who has noticed it. They are using older individuals who have almost entirely lost control of their intellectual faculties (and their bodies in general) to advance the political beliefs and tactics of movements that would never be given access to power if they legitimately had to pass through the American electorate.
Robert Mueller was one of the first brilliant examples. I was amused to learn that he had “written” an op-ed about the Roger Stone commutation for the Washington Post this weekend. The only thing that’s interesting about this event is speculation over who wrote it for him and published it in his name. Because it certainly was not Robert Mueller.
Everyone, myself included, was shocked by Mueller’s appearance before Congress, because it revealed how completely and utterly gone the man was mentally. After hearing years of conspiracy theories about the man and his evil intentions, it turned out the guy was just a senile placeholder for political fixers to have their way with the Department of Justice and find excuses to smear, bankrupt, and imprison their political rivals. Mueller stammered and forgot what he was talking about mid-sentence. He was seemingly unaware of anything that was actually in the report published under his name. He flipped helplessly through the tome when asked direct questions about it, until exasperated lawmakers gave up and spoon-fed him quotes like you feed applesauce to a toddler. He did not know the details of interviews with the primary actors in that whole enterprise or what their role was.
He wasn’t faking ignorance, either, as attorneys tend to massage language and claim they “cannot recall exactly” when they simply do not want to answer an inconvenient inquiry. He looked like someone ripped out of a nursing home, who has to give power of attorney to one of their children because they cannot be trusted to agree to anything. And he somehow was the “leader” of a multi-year investigation that cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars and went from a Russia conspiracy to auditing people’s tax filings decades before Trump considered wandering into politics and ostrich coats. The “impartial” lawyers on his team have now become paid political commentators on left-wing news outlets, and their observations are indistinguishable from any other troll on the internet. That’s not a problem for Mueller, a lifelong Republican, because the old man probably couldn’t pick them out of a police line-up.
Knowing that the whole shebang had a completely senile leader, the chaos and lack of internal controls suddenly made sense. It was an episode straight out of Catch-22, or maybe Zaphod Beeblebrox‘s stint as President of the Galaxy in Douglas Adams. Now the “investigation” is under attack again, so they whip out the old man’s name once more for good measure. They’ve turned a real individual in an involuntary pen name for someone else. Whom?
Then there’s Joe Biden – the second visibly senile old man to be pointed toward Americans as a Trojan horse for radicals who want to subvert government operations. A man who also can’t finish a sentence and who goes off on absurd tangents, like talking about how the black kids at the community pool liked to stroke his legs to watch the hair stand back up, or calling a meek and disbelieving coed a “lying dog-faced pony soldier” for asking a simple question, while out on the campaign trail. His handlers speak openly on television about how their goal is to have him out in public as little as possible until the election. Even teenagers on TikTok understand the gig.
Biden’s campaign has totally outsourced his platform to people like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – people who could not win a national election if they tried. So the man who positioned himself as a moderate for the 50 years (!) that he has been in Washington now suddenly has some downright Marxist positions on paper. The sponsor of the 1994 crime bill now wants a national clemency board, to end cash bail, and to replace police with a civilian corps of interventionists chosen by the party to adjudicate disputes ad hoc. (Doesn’t that just sound like Stalin? The party sends out a worker to respond to a dispute in lieu of cops, and they start off trying to determine who has the most privilege in the argument? Dear God, help us all.) The same person who opposed gay marriage and plays up his lifetime as a devout Catholic wants Americans to fund gender confirmation surgeries and hormone treatments through their monthly health care premiums. Just sign here, Grandpa, and remember a reverse mortgage isn’t a scam at all. Even the Fonz is doing it!
And then we have Pelosi, at 80 years old, who visibly tries to hold her dentures in while talking on television, putting socialists on major committees and defending race riots that have caused billions of dollars of damage, mostly in low-income areas and to businesses owned and operated by minorities that employ minorities.
We have Ruth Bader Ginsburg, at 87 years old, who looks like a zombie and falls asleep during public appearances, but miraculously cranks out decisions that say whatever the machine wants her to say on any given decision.
We have Fauci, also in his late 70s, who is so detached from science that he can’t even evaluate the models that are being cranked out by academics with no actual medical background. Does anyone believe little old Fauci is behind the scenes talking about the shortcoming of an algorithm? I don’t, but I have seen quite a few data science types in their 20s and 30s who quickly parsed the coronavirus nonsense and showed how the models these folks were using don’t even produce the same results when the exact same inputs are included. But Fauci, decades past the time when civil servants typically retire, has now utterly destroyed the economy and public education in this country. Locals here are now talking about how they don’t think schools should open until there isn’t a single coronavirus case. No school for children until someone finds a cure to the common cold! This is the reality the hollow men are giving us.
All of these old people have become tools for radicals in the party to tear down American institutions, presumably so their functions can be attached to an entirely new apparatus that will advance practices and norms that are by themselves deeply unpopular with the American electorate.
This right here is why this country needs term limits, for both elected positions and bureaucratic officeholders. No one should be allowed to park themselves in government until they are Memory Ward material to be exploited by God-knows-who.
